I have to be careful and not spill my wine! It feels like we are a million miles away but we are less than four hours from Birmingham and maybe 15 minutes off the highway, just outside Ellijay.

You can always have a good time in the mountains. There are about a dozen properties up here managed by Sliding Rock Cabins and they are all owned by a bunch of nice people in Fairhope, Alabama. My cabin, which is a vastly understated description of Porch Music, is owned by an interior decorator and her husband, a lawyer in Fairhope, Alabama. It is safe to say that the owner has poured her heart and soul into decorating her mountain retreat and I can see why they love to have family gatherings up here. You can tube or fish right from the base of this cabin and it would be such a great spot for family to gather, which is exactly what my family is doing.

Exciting Changes at Overland Trails

As you know the economy has been challenging for the last few years and we have to decided to make some changes to our businesses. First of all, we have turned the management of our two cabins, the Duke and Hawthorne to Sliding Rock Cabins. Another big, and exciting change is that we have changed the upper levels of our model into an events venue called The Heritage House. You will find more information on both these changes below. We will continue to operate our real estate and Heritage Log Homes office in the lower level. Overland Trails has been around for close to 25 years and we look forward to many more.

We decided that our cabins would do much better with a full time property management service. We've known owners Terry and Jerri for several years and actually built their first home in Ellijay. They have around 45 cabins, all with a variety of amenities to choose from. Like us, they are pet friendly and internet access is also included. Many are on water or have a mountain view. The Hawthorne is for sale! Those of you who have stayed there know what a special place it is. A log cabin just a few feet away from Mountaintown Creek. This 2 bedroom, 2 bath cabin sits on over 2 acres and is only 5 minutes away from downtown Ellijay. In addition there is a storage building and workshop. The Heritage House
Over the years we have had several requests to use our model for a party or wedding. We finally decided it was time to use it as more than a model. The Heritage House can host up to 100 guests. We have an extensive landscaping plan for behind the house that will allow for outdoor use. We've already hosted two events and are overwhelmed with the inquiries we are getting and already have several bookings. Our website is being restructured and will be up this week. North Georgia's Gilmer County Promotes Cabin Fever Vacation Rentals in the Mountains

GILMER COUNTY, GA--(Marketwire - February 17, 2010) - Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains and just a one-hour drive from Atlanta, North Georgia's Gilmer County has come down with "cabin fever," but according to the area's Chamber of Commerce -- "cabin fever in a good way."

Wintertime or Holiday Blues?

If you've visited any of the stores lately, been on a freeway, logged onto the Internet to view the latest news, or just picked up an old fashioned newspaper, you may have noticed people seem to be a little bit stressed this time of the year. Maybe it's that winter has officially arrived as of 11:47 AM this day or maybe the uncertainties of the economy, who knows for sure. One thing is certain though if you take time to slow down, take a deep breath, look around you, then you can certainly see there's lots to be happy about.

For Jerri and I, it's the addition of a new pup. No we didn't plan on adding a 7th fur face, (5 doggies and 2 kitties) but as some of you may know, they have a way of finding you. He's a wonderful little addition, who after the initial gnashing of other doggies teeth, has jumped right into the mix. So we're really grateful for "Buddy".

We're extremely grateful for having a business that provides so much for so many people from the folks that stay with us, to the folks that help us daily, we're extremely lucky. Being in the North Georgia Mountains should be enough to celebrate, and having a business that we both love and can enjoy together, is even better. Rarely, can you find a business that a married couple can enjoy working together, day after day, but here we are after over 8 years in business, still happily married, and still enjoying the ride.

And after 10 years, living in the mountains of North Georgia, it would seem, we'd get a bit jaundiced or at least used to what we see most days. But it is still awe-inspiring to see the dozen or so deer that graze across from our house each morning, taunting the boys with impunity no less, the red-tailed hawk that swoops throughout the neighborhood, the evening owl that serenades us, the smell of the wood burning in the fireplace, the frost on the plants, knowing that spring and trout season, is just around the corner, along with the promise of fresh wild blueberries and raspberries, watching the beauty of a morning haze across the Ellijay River as it rushes by, then clearing away to another cool, crisp fresh mountain day, wow, could it get any better than this?

So our suggestion, get up here, if not in a permanent way, then at least for a weekend. Mountain time is truly slower here, the stress levels will at least partially dissipate, maybe your blood pressure will travel lower, as you travel higher in the elevation. Who knows maybe we'll order a bit of snow for you!

How about another cabin?

We are so lucky to have so many people that recommend us to others. From real estate agents, to pet rescues folks, to the thousands of prior guests, to owners, it's been great. We've really been fortunate to be able to select what we feel are the best of the best. So here is our latest, Quality Time, a beautiful 4 bedroom, 3 bath cabin, sitting on a lovely, secluded stretch of Clear Creek. As always, it's pet friendly, has a great size fenced yard for the doggies. And games, Foosball, Pool, Ping-Pong, and Air Hockey. Wireless Internet and free long distance. TV/DVD players, really just about anything you could ask for, Quality Time has it.

Quality Time is already becoming one of those cabins, meaning it's booked for the rest of 2009, but 2010 is open (so far).

But what's there to do in the North Georgia Mountains?

We're constantly asked the question, "But what is there to do in the North Georgia Mountains". So we thought we'd spend a bit of time to give a few suggestions of the many activities available in and around Ellijay and Blue Ridge. Though we have to be honest, when most our our guests get here, after fighting their daily, horrendous traffic snarls, those same folks already tense from an overload of work, traffic, school, deadlines, economic stress, then for some reason "doing something" just doesn't seem to happen. Unless you consider sitting on the porch, feet kicked back, relaxing, drinking coffee, unwinding, and watching the world go by in its much slower mountain pace, something to do.

But for those still needing the stimuli of something to do here are a few of the upcoming events:

• The fall biggie, the 38th Annual Apple Arts, Apple Festival, & Apple Festival Parade, roughly 30,000 folks come up the second and third weekends of October to enjoy all things apple.

• Pick'n the Park, sponsored by the Dedicated Ellijay Merchants, a great way to enjoy live music in the Ellijay Square

• 3rd Annual Music Festival & BBQ, 31 October, Cherry Log Christian Church, 1149 Cherry Log Street, Cherry Log, GA

• Paws in the Park Parade, 24 October, Downtown Blue Ridge City Park, enjoy a day with your favorite pet. Event includes parade, pet education and demonstrations, rabies clinic, micro-chipping, contests, prizes, photos with your pet, and much more!!! 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Humane Society. • Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, Blue Ridge GA, yep, a real train ride further up into the mountains, lots of fun for all.

• Swan Drive-in, that's correct a real drive-in. They even show first run movies. For those that remember and for those that never had the chance to go this is a must.

• North Georgia Wine Tour, what a great way to enjoy the mountains of North Georgia. The vineyards are beautiful, the people friendly, and you'll learn lots about Georgia wine.

• Fly-fishing, outside the doors of many of our cabins

• And we have Hiking, Biking, Waterfalls, Burt's Pumpkin Farm, Gorilla Haven, and Kangaroo Center

Featured Cabins

Many of you stay at your favorite cabin each time you visit us. However, we decided to try to tempt you with one of our many others. And no, there's nothing wrong with sticking with your favorite, thought, we'd mix it up, just for variety's sake.

Our featured cabins and little about them:

Creekside Serenity, is one of our newest and cutest to come on board. The owners, Greg and Harriet, really spruced this beauty up. It's one of those rare secluded, but relatively easy to get to, cabins that seems to have it all. Wooded setting, sitting by a nice, noisy creek, screened porch, fenced yard, wireless Internet, and a TV with the NFL package (really big this time of year).

Apple Springs, is the perfect cabin for the larger groups or folks just wanting extra room. Wooded, private setting on 3+ acres, large bedrooms, spa quality master bath, huge livable patio level, with lots of comfy seating, big screen TV (football season) and game table.

Nativa, secluded with long range views that are outstanding. This two bedroom, two bath cabin is truly a beauty. Cozy up in front of the wood-burning fireplace, gazing out over the Blue Ridge Mountains. You'll think you're on top of the world. And for those that like a little adventure, bring your hand-held GPS and go geo-caching for the hidden treasure. Or for those that don't GPS, old fashion hiking directions are in the cabin thanks to Scott and Marcella.

Fly Fishing

As we mentioned, in our last newsletter, we're developing a stretch of the Ellijay River for the enjoyment of the fly-fishing folks. Our first spring stocking went well but obviously it takes much more to develop and sustain. So after consulting with some of you fishing aficionados, we plan on restocking in late October, early November. According to many, by next Trout season, we should have a good crop of fish.

Real Estate

Our real estate friends are telling us, if you're thinking of purchasing, now is the time. They're seeing an increase of activity, especially in this area. In fact, many folks are asking them, "Did I wait to long?"

As luck would have it, a couple of owners have mentioned possibly selling their properties. So if anyone is thinking about buying an income producing property, with a known rental track record, we'd love to keep all of our cabins on our program and feel that since many of you know the cabins and what we offer, you may want to think about buying. North Georgia Trout Fishing

Imagine waking early on a cool, crisp morning, in the beautiful North Georgia Mountains, to the comforting smell of freshly roasted coffee, a faint clouded mist hanging stubbornly over the noisy river just a few steps outside your log cabin’s door. Now once again imagine, donning the waders and grabbing that special fly-rig, and heading outside for yet another relaxing, mind-soothing morning of no pressure trout fishing, with the knowledge that you're in the middle of some of the best fly-fishing available in the North Georgia Mountains.

Well, welcome to Sliding Rock Cabins on the Ellijay River. We’re very excited to announce that we’ve been granted all permitting approvals and have begun stocking a large private section of our Ellijay River fronting cabins with hundreds of pounds of rainbow trout. As many anglers know, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources already introduces millions of trout to our local rivers and streams, in anticipation of the upcoming trout season. Sliding Rock Cabins has been granted the rights to stock a large, private section of the Ellijay River, with nice size, catch and release rainbow trout. With these two initiatives, a true fan of trout fishing will be able to be fishing within minutes, with just a few steps from the front door of their luxurious North Georgia Vacation Rental.

As one of our cabin owners commented, after a couple of hours catching and releasing 17 good sized, adult trout, some as large as 4 pounds, “He’d not had that much fly-fishing fun in years!” Anita, his wife then lamented, “Yes, but now I’ll never get you out of the river”.
